Chivayo laments impact of ZESA fraud charge

Wicknell Chivayo, a controversial businessman and socialite, has testified before the High Court that it is now impossible for him to secure lucrative contracts as a result of his detention on charges of defrauding the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC).

He was giving testimony in a lawsuit where he is suing ZPC for US$22 million for libel and for breaking the contract for the solar project, which he claims was still in effect.

Chivayo claimed that the ZPC affair has significantly hurt business for his company, Intratrek Zimbabwe, both domestically and internationally.

According to Chivayo, he has lost favor with potential customers.

I can no longer do any projects due to the bad publicity l have received due to the ZPC deal,” he said.

“I have lost potential business in Kenya and Tanzania. l had gone there to do business and l was told l was the person who took money from ZPC and ran away.”

He also stated that ZPC owed Intratrek a sizable sum of money as a result of a contract they signed seven years earlier.

Prior to being sued, ZPC accused Chivayo of stealing funds intended for the Gwanda solar project, which he allegedly failed to carry out.

However, Chivayo disputes the accusations.

It makes no sense that I failed to fulfill the commitments made because we visited the place together and they returned with a report.

Chivhayo said that “they have been spiteful and spreading lies.”

The once-flamboyant tycoon stated that if given the opportunity, he would like to finish the project for the good of the nation.
