Siqokogela Mphoko, the son of the country’s former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko, was arrested on rape charges in Bulawayo on Wednesday.
He is accused of sexually assaulting his 12-year-old niece.
Siqokogela’s detention was verified by police.
“Siqokoqela Mphoko was detained by police in Bulawayo on Wednesday and will appear in court.” “He was arrested on rape accusations,” Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated.
Mphoko was mentioned on Facebook earlier Wednesday morning as stating he was surrendering to police.
“I believe in the justice system, therefore I’m on my way to Hillside Police Station right now to turn myself in,” he explained.
“I am asking for your prayers as well as your support.” I appreciate your love and understanding.”
At the time of publishing, it was not immediately clear if the matter had appeared before the courts amid unconfirmed reports suspect had fled from police custody, and in hiding.
