According to two sources acquainted with the upcoming statement, the US wants to welcome up to 100,000 Ukrainians escaping the Russian assault.
The planned statement comes as US President Joe Biden meets with European leaders on Thursday to discuss the West’s reaction to Moscow’s aggression against its neighbor. It was not immediately clear how the effort would work, including travel and immigration logistics.
According to a Biden administration official, not all of the approved Ukrainians will enter the United States under the refugee program, with some arriving on family-based visas or through a procedure known as humanitarian parole.
According to the UN refugee agency, more than 3.5 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded the nation on February 24, the fastest-moving refugee crisis in Europe since World War II ended.
