Woman Sentenced For a Year In Prison Over False Rape Report

A 38-year-old Bulawayo resident from the Mahatshula North area was given a 12-month prison term for falsely accusing her husband of rape.

Sipho Majahana, also known as Zanele Moyo, falsely accused her 52-year-old husband Doswell Mupundu of rape in order to get even with him after he had abused her.

Majahana filed a lawsuit after alleging that her husband had raped their daughter, who was nine years old.

She was accused of obstructing justice when she appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Gamuchirai Gore on Tuesday.

On the basis of her own admission of guilt, Majahana was found guilty and given a 12-month prison term.

However, four months were also suspended with the requirement that she complete 140 hours of community service at Queens Park Police Camp, and eight months were suspended for five years with the condition of good behavior.

Sehliselo Khumalo, the prosecutor, claimed that Majahana produced a false police report on March 19, 2022, saying that her husband Mupundu had sexually assaulted their daughter.

Regional prosecutor Patience Sibanda, who had been tasked with handling Mupundu’s alleged rape case, conducted separate interviews with Majahana and her little daughter prior to the trial, which began on April 29.

The young girl admitted throughout the interview that she had been coerced into telling a falsehood about her father by her mother. The young girl revealed that she was never raped.

When Majahana was cross-examined, she stated that she had lied to her sister, Lucy Masuku that Mupundu raped the child.

She said she hoped that Masuku and her friends would gang up and beat up her husband for assaulting her.

Majahana later deposited an affidavit saying she had made a false report about the rape case.
